Australia to build first chip packaging plant; Him & Hers bolster at-home testing

April 2, 2026

Archer Materials’ April newsletter covers:

  • Australia’s first commercial semiconductor packaging plant
  • UK government committing £2 billion into commercial quantum computing
  • Canada investing $900+ in quantum to boost defence
  • Him & Hers and Quest Diagnostics enter growing at-home testing market

Australia build’s its first chip packaging plant

Western Sydney will house Australia’s first commercial semiconductor packaging plant, which is an important step to plug the country into the global supply chain. The site is set to open in 2027 within the second building of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility (AMRF). The facility will focus on semiconductor advanced packaging capabilities in flip-chip, fan-out wafer-level packaging, and 2.5D architectures, enabling Australia’s sovereign chip assembly.

UK invests £2B into quantum technology

The UK government has committed £2 billion (≈$2.67B USD) to advance large-scale quantum computing, signalling a strategic shift from research to commercial deployment. A key component, the “ProQure” program, will fund the development and procurement of scalable quantum systems for national use. The initiative aims to deliver significant long-term economic impact through job creation, increased productivity, and the growth of a domestic quantum ecosystem, particularly in the healthcare, finance, and security sectors.

Canada to bolster defence through quantum with $900+ investment

Canada is strengthening its Defence Industrial Strategy to enhance national security and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains by increasing investment in dual-use technologies such as quantum computing, AI, and advanced aerospace systems. The quantum technology investment aims to advance quantum computing for code-breaking and AI integration, secure quantum communications and anti-jamming, and quantum sensors to detect electric, magnetic, and gravitational fields beyond classical limits.

Hims & Hers enters partnership with Quest Diagnostics for at-home testing

Virtual healthcare platform Hims & Hers is expanding beyond telehealth into direct-to-consumer lab testing through a partnership with Quest Diagnostics, giving users access to more than 120 biomarker tests across key health areas like heart health, hormones, and metabolism. The move reflects growing consumer demand for proactive, data-driven healthcare, enabling patients to order tests, track results, and make informed decisions without relying solely on traditional providers. With tiered pricing and integrated digital insights, the company aims to make preventive care more accessible while capitalising on a rapidly growing market for personalised health monitoring through at-home testing.
